Shopping in MauritiusMauritius is fast becoming a shopper’s paradise with the proliferation of shopping malls throughout the island from the Bagatelle Mall of Mauritius in Moka to the Ruisseau Creole in Tamarin, as well as the plethora of stored in the urban shopping centres like Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill, and Curepipe, and not forgetting the artisanal goods and factory shops selling textiles and handicrafts made on the island. There are also stores where tourists can purchase items duty free.

Jean Dominique Michel de Caudan, came to the Ile de France from Languedoc (a department in the South of France). A historical site, the peninsula called “Le Caudan” was created around a fossil coral islet, and has since hosted a gunpowder house, an astronomic and meteorological observatory, quays, warehouses, various small enterprises over the last 250 years.

Some firms produce small replicas of historic ships that are delicate and accurate thanks to the diligent research, while others produce more commercial models with the quality often reflected in the price.

The urban shopping centres of Mauritius, like those of Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill, and Curepipe are now complemented by large shopping malls that have grown in number over the past few years. Many of these shopping malls offer a leisure experience beyond shopping, with cinemas and food courts often on site.

The Phoenix mall in Vacoas-Phoenix on the central plateau, was recently refurbished and provides a range of retail stores, including fashion, footwear, accessories, jewellery, electronics and computers, health and beauty, home and décor, a food court and restaurants, as well as the hypermarket, Jumbo.
